Founded on January 28, 1878, the Yale Daily News is the oldest college newspaper in the United States. The paper is financially and editorially independent, and has published a daily edition since its founding. The Yale Daily News Historical Archive provides access to digitized versions of printed issues, dating back more than 140 years.
Daily News is the first tabloid in the United States and reached its peak circulation in 1947 at 2.4 million copies. Today, it is the ninth most widely circulated daily newspaper in the United States and is owned by tronc, the publishing division of Tribune Company.
The Daily News was the first American newspaper to use a tabloid format, and it is noted for its investigative reporting and bold headlines. Its early focus was political scandals, such as the Teapot Dome Scandal and the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to her abdication. It also covered social intrigue, such as the murder of the actress Ruby Keeler, and devoted significant attention to photography.
In recent decades, the Daily News has shifted to a more liberal voice, partly in response to conservative polemics of its crosstown rival, the New York Post. Its editorial pages frequently take on crusades that probably aren’t helpful in maintaining a reputation for objectivity, but it is still a very legitimate and popular news source.
The Daily News is a leading news source for New York City and beyond. Its award-winning writers, columnists and opinion formers bring you the very best in national and local news, New York exclusives, politics and the latest in gossip and entertainment.
