Daily News was founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson, who also owned the Chicago Tribune. The newspaper was originally a tabloid, focusing on sensational stories and headlines, but moved to broadsheet format in 1935. The Daily News competed strongly with its rival, the New York Post, and had a much larger circulation at its height in the mid-1920s. The paper emphasized political wrongdoing such as the Teapot Dome scandal and social intrigue like the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to the abdication of the British throne. The paper also took a liberal stand on social issues, such as the rights of women and blacks.

The paper won the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Commentary in 1996 for E.R. Shipp’s pieces on race, welfare and social issues, and in 1998 for Mike McAlary’s coverage of police brutality against Haitian immigrant Abner Louima. In the late 1990s, under editors-in-chief Peter Hamill and Debby Krenek, the Daily News developed a reputation for championing the First Amendment and the rights of the city’s poorest citizens. The paper was also the first major metropolitan newspaper to publish a totally electronic publishing system, and in 1999 it launched a television station, WPIX-TV.

In the 21st century, the Daily News struggled to compete with online and digital competitors. Its circulation declined significantly and it lost its place as one of the city’s top-selling newspapers. In the early 2000s, the paper lost more than half of its readers to its rival, the New York Post. In 2022, the paper was acquired by businessman Mort Zuckerman, owner of the Atlantic Media Company.
