The Daily News

Daily News

A brawny metro tabloid in its 20th-century heyday, the Daily News thrived when it dove into crime and corruption. Its investigative work helped lead to the Teapot Dome scandal, Wallis Simpson’s romance with King Edward VIII and other political wrongdoing. The newspaper’s many Pulitzer Prizes—including ones for commentary and international reporting—are a testament to the paper’s long legacy of journalism excellence.

The Daily News has been a leader in the digital realm as well. Its award-winning writers, columnists and opinion formers bring you news from the world’s greatest city and beyond. You’ll find national and local news, New York exclusives, politics and the latest in gossip and entertainment. No one covers the Yankees, Mets, Giants and Jets like the Daily News.

In its early days, the newspaper’s editorial stance was often conservative populist. It supported isolationism in the 1940s and 1960s, and was a staunch critic of abortion rights and civil liberties during the 1970s and 1980s. In the 1990s, however, the newspaper shifted its position and gained a reputation as a moderately liberal alternative to The Post.

Today, the Daily News is a financially troubled paper owned by Tribune Publishing, a company that has cut its staff and slashed its advertising budget. Last fall, the Daily News was the 18th-largest weekday newspaper in the United States, with a circulation of nearly 200,000.

Founded in 1878, the Yale Daily News is the oldest college daily newspaper in the United States. Many of its student editors and writers have gone on to prominent careers in journalism and public life, including William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, John Hersey, Joseph Lieberman, Sargent Shriver, Paul Steiger and Strobe Talbott.
