The modern automobile was first developed in the late 1800s. It was based on the internal combustion engine invented by Dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens in the 1600s. It is powered by fuels such as gasoline, diesel, and oil.

Karl Benz of Germany was the first to build a working automobile. He designed his Motorwagen in 1885 and began selling it the next year. His success inspired other inventors to try and improve on his design. The next step was to produce cars in large numbers. This is when assembly lines were introduced by American car maker Henry Ford. In this system workers stay in one place and work on only one part of the car while other parts are passed by on a conveyor belt. This allowed the car to be produced much faster than ever before.

In the 1920s the car became the dominant form of transportation in America and many other countries. Its popularity led to changes in lifestyle and social structure. It also helped to change the economy of the country. The car was a major source of revenue for the petroleum and steel industries.

The automotive industry is constantly changing and new technology is being introduced all the time. These technological advances make the automobile more comfortable, safe and fast to drive. In the near future we may see self-driving cars that will not need a driver or even a steering wheel. The future of the automobile will be very exciting.
