Founded in 1878, the Yale Daily News is America’s oldest college newspaper. The paper is published every weekday during the school year, serving both Yale and the larger community of New Haven. The paper is independent of both Yale and the university administration, and it has been owned by Mortimer Zuckerman since 1994. It has a long tradition of publishing special issues commemorating student culture and identity, including the Yale-Harvard Game Day issue, the Commencement issue, the First Year Issue and others. Many of its past editors, writers and contributors have gone on to achieve prominent careers in journalism and public service, including William F. Buckley, Lan Samantha Chang, John Hersey, Joseph Lieberman, Sargent Shriver and others.
The Yale Daily News Historical Archive was established in 1996 and contains nearly a century of historic articles, photographs and advertisements. The archive is maintained by the Yale University Library. It is freely available and may be used for research, teaching, scholarship and general interest. It also is the official repository of Yale Daily News materials for the state of Connecticut.
